Local Artist Graham Watson

The Artist’s Flexible Friend hits Honiton High Street with Velocity.

Some men when they reach 50, hit the credit card. Spending on luxuries to extend their youth and vitality. But Graham Watson, Devon based Artist hit the credit card as a unique tool to create his very special paintings.

Graham a self taught artist picked up a discarded credit card lying around back in 2001 and said “ I wonder” ... after that he never looked back as he now uses them to get lots of colour, quickly on to canvas. He had been experimenting with colour and texture but couldn’t seem to find the right tool to purvey what he wanted on to the canvas: this new flexible tool was the friend he had been searching for and he now has a collection of over 300, each one offering something slightly different.

The first was an old library card but a request to friends and family to donate old cards has given Graham a source of all sorts of plastic, from, credit, debit, shop loyalty cards and even a New York City travel card. “Having painted traditionally for many years in oils using brush and palette knife, I began to experiment with different tools in a bid to find a ‘style’ of my own” he adds, “I further developed the idea and am now immersed in every emotion and expression that for years felt stifled. Released and swimming in colour, I am finally free to explore new horizons”

Graham’s style is contemporary with a real ‘wow’ factor. Much of his inspiration comes from film and music, no doubt an echo of the days when he played bass for legends such as Martha and the Vandella’s. He is passionately creative enjoying juxtaposing images to create unique takes on modern themes. They beg to be hung in plain white frames on large expanses of wall to show off the colours and themes which Graham enthusiastically describes.

Around 20 of his works will be on show. The Originals range from around £195- £490, prints are available from around £40 and greetings cards from £1.50.

He will be ‘artist in residence’ during the exhibition (times and dates to be confirmed please phone for dates and times prior to making a visit to avoid disappointment). Art lovers or those just curious about how he achieves his eclectic range of finishes can watch him while he works. Graham says “I did something similar last year and the response from the public was brilliant so I’m really looking forward to my time here.”
